St. Mary’s Island is a small group of islands off the cost of Malpe beach in Udupi, Karnataka , India . The island is also known was Coconut Islands .The island is a geological monument because of the formation of columnar basaltic lava . The unique geometric structure of the rocks is visible all around the island .
How to get there : The only way of getting to the islands is by boat. Regular ferry service ply the 6 km distance from the Malpe fishing harbor to the islands (The boat ride is a little scary as the beach is quiet rough ) . Malpe is in Mangalore district of Karnataka and is well connected to Bangalore , plenty of overnight buses and trains to Manglaore .
Recommendation : Best time to go would be just before sunset , take the last boat to the Island .I happened to go at 3 in the afternoon and its was really really warm. Take a tripod and ND filter , its a paradise for long exposure photography . Kapu beach lighthouse is another place too see , you can go all the way to the top and get a breathtaking view of the coast of Karnataka.
